Will Samuel Be All Ears?

Today's Daily Reading Is 1 Samuel 2:

How does this prayer of Hannah come from what she experienced by “coming up” to the house of the LORD? (v.1)

1 Samuel 1:3–7 (NKJV)

3 This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there. 4 And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an offering, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the Lord had closed her womb. 6 And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the Lord had closed her womb. 7 So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat.

Should our persecutions from the mouth of God keep us from entering the house of God’s worship? (v.2)

Psalm 122:1–4 (NKJV)

1 I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.” 2 Our feet have been standing Within your gates, O Jerusalem! 3 Jerusalem is built As a city that is compact together, 4 Where the tribes go up, The tribes of the Lord, To the Testimony of Israel, To give thanks to the name of the Lord.

Why does Hannah have a prayer that is recorded as inspired Scripture if it is not because she is an example of examining herself rather than others as she left her heart upon the altar?

Hebrews 12:1–2 (NKJV)

1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Is it fair to say that her rival’s accusations were correct “until now?” (v.4)

And I will take sickness away from the midst of you. 26 No one shall suffer miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days. 27 “I will send My fear before you, I will cause confusion among all the people to whom you come, and will make all your enemies turn their backs to you.

Deuteronomy 7:12–15 (NKJV)

12 “Then it shall come to pass, because you listen to these judgments, and keep and do them, that the Lord your God will keep with you the covenant and the mercy which He swore to your fathers. 13 And He will love you and bless you and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your land, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flock, in the land of which He swore to your fathers to give you. 14 You shall be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be a male or female barren among you or among your livestock. 15 And the Lord will take away from you all sickness, and will afflict you with none of the terrible diseases of Egypt which you have known, but will lay them on all those who hate you.

But on the flip side, will children or anything of this world buy true love from another? (v.5)

12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep.

Matthew 25:8–9 (NKJV)

8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’

Genesis 4:1

1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have bought a man from the Lord.”

And doesn’t the LORD have the right to humble her by the means he has chosen? (v.7)

1 Corinthians 1:21 (NKJV)

21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

And isn’t it the LORD who establishes the foundation? (v.8)

And therefore, isn’t it the sovereign LORD who has the right to remove it from the proud? (v.9)

But why did it take several years to remove it and then reestablish it again in Hannah? (v.10)

7 So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat.

2 Corinthians 12:7 (NKJV)

7 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.

Therefore why is Hannah praying for a king?

Luke 1:46–47 (NKJV)

46 And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

Luke 1:51–55 (NKJV)

51 He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52 He has put down the mighty from their thrones, And exalted the lowly. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent away empty. 54 He has helped His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy, 55 As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed forever.”

Was she looking for something her rival was not? Something like salvation? (v.11)

Genesis 3:15 (NKJV)

15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

Is this what Elkanah saw in her that moved him to love her more?

Why does Samuel mention Eli’s sons in between his own testimony? (v.12)

What was their sin as the acting priests? (v.17) (v.29)

Leviticus 10:17–18 (NKJV)

17 “Why have you not eaten the sin offering in a holy place, since it is most holy, and God has given it to you to bear the guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the Lord? 18 See! Its blood was not brought inside the holy place; indeed you should have eaten it in a holy place, as I commanded.”

Wasn’t the point of eating it in the holy place among the worshipers so that they could bear the confessions of the children of Israel and to bring the blood of their sacrifice into the holy place of God? But the sons of Eli cared nothing for their confessions but only for their routine rituals to satisfy their bellies. At least Eli tried to understand the groanings of the worshipers.

12 And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli watched her mouth. 13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.

Why would Samuel be entrusted with Eli when Eli obviously couldn’t keep a reign of his own sons? (v.18)

5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you—6 if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination.

Or was it that his own were just not interested in obeying the voice of the LORD? (v.22)

Or were they really that ignorant of the Holy One who really does sit on the mercy seat between the cherubim? (v.25)

Therefore was the government to be entirely upon the shoulders of the priesthood? Hebrews 4:1–7 (NKJV)
