What Qualifies As Firstfruits?

The Daily Reading For Today Is Ruth 1:

Why does Samuel want the reader to be aware that this story unfolds in the days of the Judges? (v.1)

3 After him arose Jair, a Gileadite; and he judged Israel twenty-two years. 4 Now he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys; they also had thirty towns, which are called "Havoth Jair" to this day, which are in the land of Gilead. 5 And Jair died and was buried in Camon.

And why are the Judges associated with the famine in the land that caused Elimelech to leave? (v.2)

17 "I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; A Star shall come out of Jacob; A Scepter shall rise out of Israel, And batter the brow of Moab, And destroy all the sons of tumult.

Deuteronomy 23:5 (NKJV)

5 Nevertheless the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam, but the Lord your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.

Deuteronomy 27:26 (NKJV)

26 'Cursed is the one who does not confirm all the words of this law.' "And all the people shall say, 'Amen!'"

Should we assume that all the sons of Israel were spiritually cursed because of the famine, or does the fault come upon the heads or Judges of the land that served during this time? (v.3)

Therefore how is Samuel laying the groundwork to use Ruth and Naomi as an example that the blessing comes through faith? (v.4, 21)

11 "For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' 14 But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it. 15 "See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, 16 in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, 18 I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess. 19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; 20 that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them."

And how is Samuel laboring to make us see how the sovereignty of the LORD works to build that faith in those whom He predestines to save? (v.5)

Philippians 2:12–18 (NKJV)

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. 14 Do all things without complaining and disputing, 15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain. 17 Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 For the same reason you also be glad and rejoice with me.

And are we to assume that because God was with some of the Judges to bless the land, that He was with all the Judges of the land to bless it? (v.6)

Luke 4:24–27 (NKJV)

24 Then He said, "Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."

Was it wrong to leave Judah to go to Moab for food? (v.7)

Therefore was it right for Naomi to assume that she was cursed (with the curse) because the LORD had taken away her heads of the promise? (v.8)

Had they then truly left the faith of Abraham to dwell in Moab to worship the false gods? (v.9)

1 Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human court. Therefore why would the daughters-in-law of Naomi seek to abide with her faith in Israel's God if that were true that her heads died for the glory of Moab? (v.10)

How is God using the faith of Naomi's doubts to test the faith of her daughters-in-law? (v.11)

What more does Naomi need to know that the LORD of the promise has not forsaken her? (v.15)

Since the men were buried in Moab to plant the seed of faith in Ruth, does that mean that they weren't buried in the faith of Abraham? (v.17)

And therefore, how could Naomi question the faith of Ruth any longer? (v.18)

How is all of this preparing us for the birth of the Savior by which the sojourning mothers of the faith of Jesus Christ are honored here? (v.19)

And therefore, why must it take the knowledge of the redeemer to restore to Naomi the joy of her salvation? (v.20)

10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

4 These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.

And what shall be the conclusion then since she is made empty for the beginning of the harvest? (v.22)
