What Kind Of Host Are You?






The Daily (NASB) Reading: 1 Samuel 20



Why is David still on the run since Saul "humbled himself" at Naioth? Or wasn't David sticking around to find out if he truly did or did not? (v.1)

39 Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand. 40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. 41 Then many came to Him and said, "John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true." 42 And many believed in Him there.

19 And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people—for they knew He had spoken this parable against them. 20 So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor.

56 Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, "What do you think—that He will not come to the feast?" 57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might seize Him.

How is Jonathan, like Peter, not knowing what he does not know about the future of the kingdom but knowing enough that David is the anointed king of God? (v.2)


Mark 8:27–33 (NKJV)

27 Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, "Who do men say that I am?" 28 So they answered, "John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets." 29 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered and said to Him, "You are the Christ." 30 Then He strictly warned them that they should tell no one about Him. 31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, "Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men."


Therefore, why was Jonathan presumptuous to take the king aside and not receive his testimony? And therefore, why was David right to fear that Saul had the ability and the power to do to him? (v.3)


And why is Jonathan right to continue in his vow to protect David and honor him as the son and sinner in chief of the children of Israel? (v.4)


1 Timothy 1:15–17 (NKJV)

15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.


What is the significance of this wisdom hidden within this mystery here? Isn't it good to abide (in the open field) for a while before you make yourself (a host of the play) and begin to build upon that field? Shouldn't we wait until we are invited up a little higher by the Lord of that table and that field? (v.5)

6 However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, 8 which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Luke 14:8–11 (NKJV)

8 "When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; 9 and he who invited you and him come and say to you, 'Give place to this man,' and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, 'Friend, go up higher.' Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. 11 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."



Therefore why is David righteous for appealing to Saul's compassion for an invitation rather than submitting to a demand under the hand of Saul's kingdom when David cannot change the liberty of the spiritual host that abides within himself according to the anointing of the Holy Spirit? And therefore isn't David righteous to excuse himself from Saul as host to exercise his own? (v.6)


Luke 14:12–14 (NKJV)

12 Then He also said to him who invited Him, "When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. 14 And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just."


So what's the difference between Saul's house serving as a host and Jesse's house serving as a host? (v.7, 30)

15 Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him, "Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!" 16 Then He said to him, "A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, 17 and sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, 'Come, for all things are now ready.' 18 But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.' 19 And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.' 20 Still another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' 21 So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.' 22 And the servant said, 'Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.' 23 Then the master said to the servant, 'Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I say to you that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.'"

What manner of covenant did David make with Jonathan that is similar to the spiritual hosts of the Lord's baptism? And in light of this liberty of the spiritual hosts, why must we beware of hosts of wickedness? (v.8-17)

5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. 1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

Ephesians 6:10–13 (NKJV)

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.


Therefore how is David righteous for not merely seeking a free pass or "ticket to heaven" by confessing that he is not innocent of all sin and doesn't seek to violate the order that God has already established in Israel but is subjecting himself to that order in principle? (v.8)


Romans 13:1–10 (NKJV)

1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4 For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 5 Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience' sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God's ministers attending continually to this very thing. 7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor. 8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness," "You shall not covet," and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.


And how is Jonathan expressing himself as a prefigure of Christ to be the one to tell him the bad news as a promise of this covenant? Aren't pastors responsible for declaring the whole counsel of God and not just the promises as if there were no threatenings? (v.9)


Acts 20:26–30 (NKJV)

26 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. 27 For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God. 28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.



And how is David representing (the field) that looks to the pastor for honest answers with trust in their hearts? (v.10)


1 Timothy 6:20–21 (NKJV)

20 O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge—21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.


And how is Jonathan humble enough to admit that he doesn't have all the answers but that they can seek them together of how God will respond to our faith by confessing that they both must first be a part of God's field before they can be a part of God's building? And therefore, how are they working together not to become the novice like their father is, who sends out everyone to bear his load, never lifting a finger to reduce it? (v.11)


1 Corinthians 3:5–9 (NKJV)

5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. 8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, you are God's building.

Galatians 6:1–5 (NKJV)

1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. 2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 5 For each one shall bear his own load.


Why must we be like David and wait upon God for assurance of salvation? Surely the Law, which Saul represents, has condemned us all, and surely none of us should have an assurance of salvation apart from that confession, but has God given Jonathan the authority and commission to be king of that assurance for David's case? And therefore has God made us king of that assurance in anyone's case? (v.12)


Therefore how does the Lord's Table express God's goodwill (in the field) like this covenant between David and Jonathan? Surely it is not intended for our exclusive assurance in Jesus Christ alone, but it is intended to offer us a goodwill that leads to that assurance in God. And isn't the table of the Lord of hosts responsible for making the whole counsel of God known to you? (v.13)


Romans 9:3–5 (NKJV)

3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh, 4 who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; 5 of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.

Also, consider that Jonathan affirms that the LORD has been with his father, and David doesn't rebuke him for that. Therefore the Lord has not fully left Saul but only in part. Was Saul left without mercy and without grace? Saul wasn't given over to his depravity, but God has only chosen to cease using him as his instrument to teach transgressors the way. (v.13)


Therefore consider how God deals with those who reject his kingdom as a secondary means of grace that is common to all men in the institution of the State of which all men are made partakers apart from the discipline of the Lord's Table. (v.14-17)


Matthew 5:43–48 (NKJV)

43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore "put away from yourselves the evil person."



Therefore only in the Lord's Table do we have this goodwill as one collective field of blood where we are called to gather together to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. But that love can only be tested by the love of God that he has for his beloved Son. (v.17)


Colossians 1:9–15 (NKJV)

9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Luke 10:25–28 (NKJV)

25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, "What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?" 27 So he answered and said," 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,' and 'your neighbor as yourself.'" 28 And He said to him, "You have answered rightly; do this and you will live."


Therefore, like David, we should not depart from a host of this field until we understand the spirit that drives them. Are we missed at this table because we are the only ones they have arrows to shoot at or spears to thrust at? (v.19-20)



And maybe if the arrows are shot over our head, it is because they really don't have a heart for us to stay or the wisdom to know how to draw out the love to lead us to stay? (v.21-22, 35-38)


Acts 2:36–37 (NKJV)

36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." 37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"

Acts 7:52–54 (NKJV)

52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, 53 who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it." 54 When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.

But if the LORD sends you away, does it automatically mean that you are expelled from the field of play? (v.23-24)


Revelation 3:7–13 (NKJV)

7 "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, 'These things says He who is holy, He who is true, "He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens": 8 "I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. 9 Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you. 10 Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. 11 Behold, I am coming quickly! What is Saul's attitude concerning his right to sit in his seat as a judge rather than a host of the table? Is he demonstrating the LORD'S hospitality and goodwill or his own image of uniformity? (v.25-26)


1 Corinthians 11:27–29 (NKJV)

27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

Mark 2:27–28 (NKJV)

27 And He said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath."


What kind of test was this of Saul? Was it a trap and stumbling block to cause him to fall, or was it because they truly didn't know how he would respond? (v.27-29)


Revelation 2:14–16 (NKJV)

14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality. 15 Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 16 Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.

1 Corinthians 8:9 (NKJV)

9 But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak.

Romans 14:11–13 (NKJV)

11 For it is written: "As I live, says the Lord, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God." 12 So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. 13 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother's way.



Therefore "the stone of Ezel (departure)" is a reminder not to put what causes our brother to stumble in his path, but also good to remind us there is cause for departure when that stone of stumbling is the chief cornerstone. (v.19, 30-31, 41-42)


Romans 9:33 (NKJV)

33 As it is written: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame."

1 Peter 2:7–8 (NKJV)

7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, "The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone," 8 and "A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense." They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.


Do you see how Saul is seeking to establish his own kingdom rather than God's? How little value does Saul perceive of his own house within this kingdom he is trying to hold onto with his bare hands? For effect, Saul calls his own wife a bitch, and she isn't even the one betraying him for David. That shows how little he thinks of the mother who gave him Jonathan, who has been his nearest defender from the beginning. (v.30)


But how is cursing his wife and putting Jonathan to death going to secure him a kingdom? What does Saul know of David's heart in that he believes he will lose those things he has already established for business under David's kingdom? Why is he judging David by his own heart as if David seeks to build a dog-eat-dog administration? (v.31-33)


1 Samuel 13:14 (NKJV)

14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you."



Herein lies the secret to David's response to Jonathan's love in that it surpasses the love of women. (v.34, 42)

44 But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was from Gallim.

2 Samuel 6:16 (NKJV)

16 Now as the ark of the Lord came into the City of David, Michal, Saul's daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.

2 Samuel 6:20–23 (NKJV)

20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, "How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!" 21 So David said to Michal, "It was before the Lord, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the Lord. 22 And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor." 23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

The Glory of Christ
Christ's Glory as God's Representative 

 

We must not rest satisfied with only an idea of this truth or a bare assent to the doctrine. Its power must stir our hearts. What is the true blessedness of the saints in heaven? Is it not to behold and see the glory of God in delight? And do we expect, doe we desire the same state of blessedness? If so, then know that it is our present view of the glory of Christ which we have by faith that prepares us for that eternal blessedness. These things may be of little use to some who are babes in knowledge and understanding or who are unspiritual, lazy, and unable to retain these divine mysteries (1Cor.3:1-2; Heb.5:12-14). But that is why Paul declared this wisdom of God in a mystery to them that were perfect, that is, who were more advanced in spiritual knowledge who had had their 'senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Heb.5:14). It is to those who are experienced in the meditation of invisible things, who delight in the more retired paths of faith and love, that they are precious. We believe in God only in and through Christ. This is the life of our souls. God himself, whose nature is infinitely perfect, is the highest object of our faith. But we cannot come directly to God by faith. We must come by the way and by the helps he has appointed for us. This is the way by which he has revealed his infinite perfections to us, which is Jesus Christ who said, 'I am the way.' By our faith in Christ we come to put our faith in God himself (Jn.14:1). And we cannot do this in any other way but by beholding the glory of God in Christ, as we have seen (Jn.1:14).
