Playing Catch Up on the (NASB) Daily Reading: Psalm 119:1-48

What is the presumption of the NASB translators? (v.1)

Are these translators rightly giving the ownership of "blamelessness" to the "way" of the one who walks in the law of the Lord? Consider that there is no verb in the Hebrew for this clause.

Or do the NKJV translators have it more correct that the statement presumes that the one who walks in the law of the Lord (was made) "blameless" or "whole" (in the way); therefore, giving God the glory to Christ as (the way)?

Psalm 119:1–3 (NKJV)

1 Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the Lord! 2 Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart! 3 They also do no iniquity; They walk in His ways.

Why would it be better to translate the word (Tamiym) as "whole" since the definition of the (blessed man) is a man who is (made whole) by the gift of reconciliation (to God's Spirit)?

2 Corinthians 5:13 (NKJV)

13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; or if we are of sound mind, it is for you.

2 Corinthians 5:17–18 (NKJV)

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation,

A man who is "sound," "complete," or "whole" is a man whose soul is restored to him in peace and health in reconciliation with God. That's the "blessing" referred to here as a "spotless" sacrifice that was offered to symbolize a covering and reconciliation with God. Therefore the proper sacrifice signifies the image of Christ by promise since Abel (Gen.4:3-7). But to us, this is fulfilled in (the Way of Christ).

30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Acts 18:25 (NKJV)

25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John.

9 But when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

14 But this I confess to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect, so I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets.

Therefore what is it to walk in the Law of the LORD? Is it not to walk in Christ?

John 14:5–7 (NKJV)

5 Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?" 6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 7 "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him."

Romans 3:27–31 (NKJV)

27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

Isn't that why the Psalmist moves onto the testimonies of the LORD, whose hearts have been transformed by them? (v.2)

Psalm 19:7–9 (NKJV)

7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; 8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

Therefore with whose heart are these "testimonies" observed? There is no use of a plural pronoun in Hebrew regarding "the heart." Therefore how is the NKJV getting right in the manner of preaching Christ as "the whole heart?"

2 Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart!

And therefore, isn't this why "they" who are walking in (the way) commit no sin? (v.3)

1 John 3:4–9 (NKJV)

4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. 5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.

18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. 19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Aren't these the ones who are walking in (the testimonies) of "His ways" because these testimonies lead to precepts and instruction? (v.4)

Ephesians 2:8–10 (NKJV)

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Therefore what would the Psalmist be contrasting "his ways" with if the NASB was correct in giving ownership of blamelessness to "whose" way as in their own walk? (v.1, 5)

(v.1) How blessed are those (whose way) is blameless . . .

(v.5) Oh, that my ways were directed To keep Your statutes!

Therefore what does "the blessed" heart (singular) provide the man who is (not) whole? (v.6)

2 Corinthians 3:4–6 (NKJV)

4 And we have such trust through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

And therefore, what does the Psalmist anticipate by understanding not only the Law but also the testimony of the Holy One? (v.7)

10 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Acts 3:14–16 (NKJV)

14 But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses. 16 And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

Isn't the Psalmist anticipating to give him this "uprightness" of heart? (v.7)

Ezekiel 36:24–28 (NKJV)

24 For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land. 25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. 28 Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.

And how does this knowledge also help him know his need for mercy? (v.8)

But more importantly, how does this help us understand that he already understood that he was forsaken through Adam by original sin being given over to the total inability of man? (v.8)

22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—

Romans 1:24–25 (NKJV)

24 Therefore, God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

And therefore, how does this help us understand why he is asking not to be forsaken (utterly)!? (v.8)

Romans 1:26–27 (NKJV)

26 For this reason, God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

And therefore knowing the results of being forsaken utterly, isn't this understanding why the Psalmist is turned toward the youth by redirecting his prayer in the form of teaching? (v.9)

2 Timothy 2:19–22 (NKJV)

19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity." 20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. 21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. 22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Therefore what is the Psalmist teaching young men by telling them how he received a new heart? What was the thing he did that kept his way pure? (v.9)

6 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. 7 But reject profane and old wives' fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance.

What did he shape his walk according to, and how did that keep his heart from wandering? (v.10)

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Since he understands his depravity, what did he do with God's Word? (v.11)

But what does a heart do if it denies God's Word?

Therefore what is the "test" that this Word has truly been treasured in the heart? (v.13)

Why must we be continually tested by the standard of the truth? (v.14-15)

How does our remaining depravity as grave clothes lead us to forget the Word? (v.16)

What is required to be able to continue in (the walk) of God's Way and Word? (v.17)
