Today's Daily Reading Is Judges 10:1-11:11

What are these judges, like Joshua, saving Israel from? (v.1)



Therefore in what sense is the term "to save" being used here?


(yāšaʿ). vb. to save, deliver, help; to be helped, to be victorious. The core meaning of this verb involves helping or saving from danger; some forms can refer to being helped or being victorious.

This is the primary verb for salvation in the Hebrew Bible. It literally refers to helping or saving from danger. It is often used of giving victory in battle (e.g., Psa 20:6). Both God and humans can save (yāšaʿ) people. Moses saved (yāšaʿ) the daughters of Jethro from the shepherds (Exod 2:17). God saved (yāšaʿ) Israel from the Egyptians (Exod 14:30) and later from their enemies through the judges (Judg 2:18). In Psalm 6:5, the psalmist asks Yahweh to save (yāšaʿ) his soul (נֶפֶשׁ, nepeš), i.e., his life. The gods made by humans cannot save (yāšaʿ) people (Jer 2:28).

Between Tola and Jair, how many years did Israel have without (the threat of the reign of sin) through the monarchs of Baal? (v.2-3)



What is the point of the author mentioning 30 sons with 30 donkeys and 30 cities? (v.4)


Is there any wisdom and virtue in the creation of these villages of Jair? (v.4)


How is this territory "not" like a [arch-diocese] form of government?


Doesn't the donkey signify the travel between these cities, which signified the sons' delegated and divided authority between these cities?


Should we presume each son had his own city, like a Roman bishop his own church? (v.5)


2 Corinthians 10:12–16 (NKJV)

12 For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. 13 We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere which God appointed us—a sphere which especially includes you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves (as though our authority did not extend to you), for it was to you that we came with the gospel of Christ; 15 not boasting of things beyond measure, that is, in other men's labors, but having hope, that as your faith is increased, we shall be greatly enlarged by you in our sphere, 16 to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's sphere of accomplishment.


But like Mormons, was this how they were able to have up to 30 sons? (v.6)


Therefore how would this be better rightly applied to the elders and deacons of the new covenant church? (v.7)


Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 (NKJV)

9 Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. 11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

11 "Now when they bring you to the synagogues and (magistrates/archas) and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say.


ἀρχή (archē). n. fem. beginning, ruler. That which is first, either in time or in rank and authority.

Occurring 130 times in the NT, the word archē always carries a sense of primacy; it can denote primacy of time (e.g., "beginning") or primacy in authority (e.g., "ruler"). The noun archē often occurs along with the word ἐξουσία (exousia, "authority") in the NT when it has the sense of "dominion." For example, Luke 12:11 and Titus 3:1 use archē and exousia to denote governmental authorities, while Eph 6:12 uses the pair of terms to refer to spiritual forces at work in the heavenly realms (compare Eph 3:10). In the Septuagint, the word frequently refers to dominion and power as it is expressed in official positions of leadership (Gen 4:13, 1 Chr 26:10; Neh 9:17). The related masculine noun, ἄρχων (archōn) appears frequently in the NT. Its basic meaning is "ruler," "lord," or "prince." In the NT, it can be applied to earthly authority (Acts 4:26), evil spirits (Matt 9:34), or Christ himself (Rev 1:5). It can also suggest a lower-level administrative leader or official (Matt 9:18; Acts 16:19). Matthew 12:24 refers to Beelzebul as the archōn of the demons.

Since traveling among many villages is good for wisdom in spreading the whole counsel of God much faster, where all the churches can benefit from the diversity of the gifts of the Spirit of the knowledge of God in the various uses of the men, how is this a better understanding of how the early church operated as a plurality of elders with equal authority rather than the Roman structure that evolved later with the supremacy of the Pope and the Papacy over all the churches?


1 Corinthians 12:1–11 (NKJV)

Therefore how does this make for a more effective border between the true church and the false church to weed out heresies and for the discipline of the universal church toward a more complete and holy view of the Word of God? (v.8)

26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Therefore wasn't it because of the weakness of Israel's spiritual borders that her enemies were able to invade the foundation on the west side of the Jordan?! (v.9)


Finally, a proper confession! (v.10)


But how is the LORD making sure to them that this sin is put to death? (v.11-14)


What was the sign of their repentance but the acceptance of their present discipline? (v.15-16)


But how does abiding in sin prevent our sanctification, like Gilead trying to abide across the Jordan on the east in the land of Ammon alone? And why is the author giving Ammon the right to the land if it is not for the discipline of Gilead? (v.8, 17)



Why would the sons and so-called leaders of Gilead need to ask for another man to reign over them if the LORD was reigning over them in the fatherly sense? (v.18)


Therefore doesn't this express the depth of their lostness and their ignorance for trying to establish themselves on the promise apart from the foundation on the opposite side of the Jordan?


Isn't this one of those "I told you so" moments? (11:1)


This was Israel's weakness from the very beginning. (11:2)



When you're in the business of creating bastard sons, you're basically digging your own grave. (11:3, 9)


Some are inherently good at obtaining the promise without the foundation that holds up the promise because when the hour of trial comes, it is quickly revealed upon what the promise was built upon. (11:31, 35)


Luke 11:11–13 (NKJV)

11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"

13 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.


Matthew 7:24–27 (NKJV)

24 "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26 "But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall."


Therefore does the LORD give Jephthah victory on the basis of the perfection of Israel's faith or on the direction of Israel's faith? (v.10-11)


Wasn't this Gilead's with his brothers Rueben and the half-tribe of Manasseh's displaced contention with the sons of Israel on the west?


Joshua 22:10–12 (NKJV)

10 And when they came to the region of the Jordan which is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan—a great, impressive altar. 11 Now the children of Israel heard someone say, "Behold, the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh have built an altar on the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region of the Jordan—on the children of Israel's side." 12 And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered together at Shiloh to go to war against them.

Joshua 22:17–30 (NKJV)

17 Is the iniquity of Peor not enough for us, from which we are not cleansed till this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord, 18 but that you must turn away this day from following the Lord? So your descendants would make our descendants cease fearing the Lord.' 26 Therefore we said, 'Let us now prepare to build ourselves an altar, not for burnt offering nor for sacrifice, 27 but that it may be a witness between you and us and our generations after us, that we may perform the service of the Lord before Him with our burnt offerings, with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your descendants may not say to our descendants in time to come, "You have no part in the Lord."' 28 Therefore we said that it will be, when they say this to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say, 'Here is the replica of the altar of the Lord which our fathers made, though not for burnt offerings nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between you and us.' 29 Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord, and turn from following the Lord this day, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for grain offerings, or for sacrifices, besides the altar of the Lord our God which is before His tabernacle." 30 Now when Phinehas the priest and the rulers of the congregation, the heads of the divisions of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and the children of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them.

Joshua 22:33–34 (NKJV)

33 So the thing pleased the children of Israel, and the children of Israel blessed God; they spoke no more of going against them in battle, to destroy the land where the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt. 34 The children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar, Witness, "For it is a witness between us that the Lord is God."


Therefore how is the LORD letting them taste their own baseless fears in struggling to lay a more sure foundation on the east when they have yet to learn the foundation on the west?


Joshua 24:1–2 (NKJV)

1 Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and called for the elders of Israel, for their heads, for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God. 2 And Joshua said to all the people, "Thus says the Lord God of Israel: 'Your fathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, dwelt on the other side of the River in old times; and they served other gods.

Joshua 23:1–3 (NKJV)

1 Now it came to pass, a long time after the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua was old, advanced in age. 2 And Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders, for their heads, for their judges, and for their officers, and said to them: "I am old, advanced in age. 3 You have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations because of you, for the Lord your God is He who has fought for you.

Joshua 24:11–28 (NKJV)

And the men of Jericho fought against you—also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. But I delivered them into your hand. 12 I sent the hornet before you which drove them out from before you, also the two kings of the Amorites, but not with your sword or with your bow. 13 I have given you a land for which you did not labor, and cities which you did not build, and you dwell in them; you eat of the vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.' 14 "Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." 16 So the people answered and said: "Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; 17 for the Lord our God is He who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way that we went and among all the people through whom we passed. 18 And the Lord drove out from before us all the people, including the Amorites who dwelt in the land. We also will serve the Lord, for He is our God." 19 But Joshua said to the people, "You cannot serve the Lord, for He is a holy God. He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and consume you, after He has done you good." 21 And the people said to Joshua, "No, but we will serve the Lord!" 22 So Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord for yourselves, to serve Him." And they said, "We are witnesses!" 23 "Now therefore," he said, "put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord God of Israel." 24 And the people said to Joshua, "The Lord our God we will serve, and His voice we will obey!" 25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. 26 Then Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. And he took a large stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. 27 And Joshua said to all the people, "Behold, this stone shall be a witness to us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord which He spoke to us. It shall therefore be a witness to you, lest you deny your God." 28 So Joshua let the people depart, each to his own inheritance.


Therefore wasn't Shechem the straight gate? And didn't Gideon's 300 chase away 15,000?

Therefore why isn't the headship of the witness at Shechem's gate a sufficient foundation to obtain the promises? (v.11)


Romans 9:30–33 (NKJV)

30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness of faith; 31 but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone. 33 As it is written: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame."

The Glory of Christ
Christ's Glory as God's Representative 

 

In fact, the light of faith is given to us chiefly to enable us to behold the glory of God in Christ (2Cor.4:6). If we do not have this light which is given to believers by the power of God, we must be strangers to the whole mystery of the gospel. But when we behold the glory of God in Christ, we behold Christ's glory also. This is how the image of God is renewed in us, and how we are made like Christ. Anyone who thinks that this is unnecessary to Christian practice and for our sanctification does not know Christ, nor the gospel. Nor has he the true faith of the universal (catholic) church. This is the root from which all Christian duties arise and grow and by which they are distinguished from the works of heathens. He is not a Christian who does not believe that faith in the person of Christ is the source and motive of all evangelical obedience or who does not know that faith rests on the revelation of the glory of God in Christ. To deny these truths would overthrow the foundation of faith and would demolish true religion in the heart. So it is our duty daily to behold by faith the glory of Christ!
