Today's Reading Is Ruth 3 & 4:



How do we know that this relationship between Ruth and Boaz was not just "one night with a king?" (v.8)


Ruth 2:23 (NKJV)

23 So she stayed close by the young women of Boaz, to glean until the end of barley harvest and wheat harvest; and she dwelt with her mother-in-law.


And since the reaping of the harvest was coming to a close, why was it necessary that Naomi and Ruth find their security in a man they could trust? (v.1, 9, 12, 18) (4:4-6)


Hebrews 10:24–25 (NKJV)

24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.



Therefore how do we know that Naomi was a wise and virtuous woman? (v.2)


Proverbs 31:10–13 (NKJV)

10 Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. 13 She seeks wool and flax, And willingly works with her hands.

11 And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you request, for all the people of my town know that you are a virtuous woman.


And wasn't the time spent gleaning from Boaz as his servant among the true servants evidence that he was a good man?

How does her preparation for his presence correlate to our membership to Christ through baptism since she was told to "wash and anoint" herself and to put on her "best" clothes? And did her gleaning in any way change how the host and master of the table viewed her presence at the table among the committed servants? (v.3)


Ephesians 4:21–24 (NKJV)

21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

How does Naomi have faith that this will secure the inheritance of her LORD? (v.4, 9) (4:5)

And was her confession more than mere words? (v.6)

Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And what was the quality and manner of her love? (v.7)

And what was the pledge of her submission? (v.8)

7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.


And what is the anticipation of her faith by naming him as her redeemer? (v.9)


Galatians 2:20 (NKJV)

20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

2 Timothy 2:19 (NKJV)

19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity."



And what was the answer of her redeemer? (v.10)


48 Then He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." 49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" 50 Then He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."


And how does Boaz know that he is loved (by her) for the man that he is and not for the man Ruth might have imagined him to be since she is a youth in comparison? (v.11)


Psalm 50:16–23 (NKJV)

16 But to the wicked God says: "What right have you to declare My statutes, Or take My covenant in your mouth, 17 Seeing you hate instruction And cast My words behind you? 18 When you saw a thief, you consented with him, And have been a partaker with adulterers. 19 You give your mouth to evil, And your tongue frames deceit. 20 You sit and speak against your brother; You slander your own mother's son. 21 These things you have done, and I kept silent; You thought that I was altogether like you; But I will rebuke you, And set them in order before your eyes. 22 "Now consider this, you who forget God, Lest I tear you in pieces, And there be none to deliver: 23 Whoever offers praise glorifies Me; And to him who orders his conduct aright I will show the salvation of God."


Therefore why must he show that he too must be under authority? (v.12)

10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.


If Ruth wants more than to abide among his slaves, how must she demonstrate her patience in order to be among Boaz as a friend? (v.13)


John 15:13–17

13 Greater love has no one than this than to lay down one's life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you slaves, for a slave does not know what his master is doing, but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another.

11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. 12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.


Therefore why is it more important that our faith be validated by the image of truth rather than the wicked imaginations and inflations of our sinful hearts? (v.14)

By Ruth coming to the threshing floor, what was she proclaiming that was secretly desired and hidden within her heart except that she wanted to demonstrate that she was willing to suffer with Boaz?

4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

And therefore, since she came "empty," why was Boaz not ashamed "to fill" her with the greatest measure of his love? (v.15)

And therefore, doesn't Naomi rightly encourage her, saying, "Who are you, my daughter?

But was her (Sabbath-Keeper) perfected yet, only giving her six measures since his business was not yet complete? And was it for his honor alone that he emptied himself of what was rightfully his to fill another with what had been lost? (v.17)

And therefore, wasn't the redeemer commissioned by love and uniquely poured out for the Father's chosen vessel of his love? (v.18)

Now, who is it that must open this gift for both Boaz and Ruth? (4:1)

1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him." 3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Why is it more likely that Boaz is the youngest of the sons of Salmon since he must notify his brother of his right before he advances it? (v.3)


And is it possible that Elimelech and this unnamed redeemer are sons of a different mother than Rahab? (v.4)


Therefore how is Boaz searching for the motivations of his heart by exposing his ignorance of the law and his carelessness to the purpose of the law? (v.5)


You see then that his motivation was to only prosper the image of himself rather than to guard and protect the tree of life that was planted (and appointed) in Israel. (v.6)


Genesis 4:25 (NKJV)

25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, "For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed."

Genesis 3:15 (NKJV)

15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."

And therefore, what did his inheritance consist of since his confession was only in name but without the blessing? (v.7)

And in what way would Ruth have corrupted his inheritance if it was not because of his vain faith in the external nature of the law? (v.8)

1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. 5 For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, "The man who does those things shall live by them." 6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or," 'Who will descend into the abyss?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach):


Therefore according to his original motivation, he was willing to corrupt it by adding another wife to his house for the sake of the possession. (v.4, 6, 8)


But Boaz was motivated by love for the promise of salvation and for the grace that God had extended to Rahab, his mother. And therefore, what was Boaz unashamedly redeeming with the love and wisdom that descended from above if it wasn't the "pain" and "suffering" that had been imputed to Naomi and Ruth in the deaths of their heads of the house? (v.9) (3:7-9)


Galatians 3:10–14 (NKJV)

10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them." 11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith." 12 Yet the law is not of faith, but "the man who does them shall live by them." 13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

James 3:17 (NKJV)

17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.



And what is now to be the life of Boaz, in his own death, but Ruth, who heals his father's "sickness?" (v.10)


Exodus 15:25–26 (NKJV)

25 So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them, 26 and said, "If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you."


And what is Boaz's honor but that he waited to marry, not for his own welfare, but for the welfare of another on the foundation of love that is contrary to the love of this world? (v.11)

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Colossians 3:14–17 (NKJV)

14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.


Therefore why do the elders bless Boaz this way? Aren't they mocking him by subtlely telling him this is our sphere of authority? Surely you can do business with us, Boaz, for it prospers us all, but conduct your politics, and therefore your religion, in Bethlehem. (v.11)


And what is the new example that he sets but to build his house on a singular love in the repentance of his mother's honor, Rahab, who came into the covenant of Israel by also forsaking the harlotry of the nations as did Ruth? (v.12)


And weren't the elders mocking the branch of Boaz by pointing out the root of his spiritual tree while chuckling the name Tamar with this so-called blessing?


Romans 3:10–20 (NKJV)

10 As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one." 13 "Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit"; "The poison of asps is under their lips"; 14 "Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness." 15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 And the way of peace they have not known." 18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes." 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.



And what is the firstfruit of Boaz's loyalty but the LORD giving him a son of the chosen Messianic line? (v.13)


Psalm 19:4–5 (NKJV)

4 Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun, 5 Which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, And rejoices like a strong man to run its race.


If Boaz was already married, could he have still taken Ruth like the rest of Israel, which had been sinning? But would his name have been above reproach in Israel's progressive sanctification and striving legacy? Therefore what do the "women" (of Israel) see that the "elders" (of Ephrathah) don't? (v.14)


Proverbs 22:1–2 (NKJV)

1 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold. 2 The rich and the poor have this in common, The Lord is the maker of them all.

Ecclesiastes 7:1–3 (NKJV)

1 A good name is better than precious ointment, And the day of death than the day of one's birth; 2 Better to go to the house of mourning Than to go to the house of feasting, For that is the end of all men; And the living will take it to heart. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter, For by a sad countenance the heart is made better.

25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, "For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed." 26 And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. And in conclusion, why does Samuel use the story of Ruth to add virtue to David's character as a king of the Messianic covenant? (v.17)

And why is Naomi rewarded with this precious promise to hold to her breast to prove him as if he were her own? (v.16)

10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this," Says the Lord of hosts, "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.

Isaiah 7:10–11 (NKJV)

10 Moreover the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, 11 "Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above."


Isn't it because Ruth would have lived with Boaz in Bethlehem, but the land of Obed was dedicated through Naomi, which is in Ephrathah? And isn't that why the elders of Ephrathah mocked Boaz since Perez continues in Ephrathah? (v.18-22)

The Glory of Christ
Christ's Glory as God's Representative 

 

We must not rest satisfied with only an idea of this truth or a bare assent to the doctrine. Its power must stir our hearts. What is the true blessedness of the saints in heaven? Is it not to behold and see the glory of God in delight? And do we expect, doe we desire the same state of blessedness? If so, then know that it is our present view of the glory of Christ which we have by faith that prepares us for that eternal blessedness. These things may be of little use to some who are babes in knowledge and understanding or who are unspiritual, lazy, and unable to retain these divine mysteries (1Cor.3:1-2; Heb.5:12-14). But that is why Paul declared this wisdom of God in a mystery to them that were perfect, that is, who were more advanced in spiritual knowledge who had had their 'senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Heb.5:14). It is to those who are experienced in the meditation of invisible things, who delight in the more retired paths of faith and love, that they are precious. We believe in God only in and through Christ. This is the life of our souls. God himself, whose nature is infinitely perfect, is the highest object of our faith. But we cannot come directly to God by faith. We must come by the way and by the helps he has appointed for us. This is the way by which he has revealed his infinite perfections to us, which is Jesus Christ who said, 'I am the way.' By our faith in Christ we come to put our faith in God himself (Jn.14:1). And we cannot do this in any other way but by beholding the glory of God in Christ, as we have seen (Jn.1:14).
