Soaking In The Love Of God





The Daily (NASB) Reading: Titus 1



Why does Paul make himself first and foremost "a slave" of God before he calls himself an Apostle of Jesus Christ? (v.1)


Romans 6:16 (NKJV)

16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness?

Romans 6:18–23 (NKJV)

18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. 20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.



Wasn't he free in regard to his sonship?


John 8:31–36 (NKJV)

31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." 33 They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, 'You will be made free'?" 34 Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.


While the Greek term doulos strictly means slave, why did the NASB translators want to use the term bond-servant rather than allowing for the plain sense to be the main sense?


To show some grace towards the NASB translators, there is some benefit to understanding the term as bond-slave. While it is not Paul's intent here, the Apostles were "bonded" together in the chains of the gospel like oxen in a yoke. But Paul is not trying to make that point here. He is only calling attention to the fact that he is first employed by God to satisfy God.



What is the purpose of Paul's slavery and Apostleship?


It's clear that Paul understood his purpose to be the building up of the faith in the elect of God.


2 Timothy 2:8–10 (NKJV)

8 Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, 9 for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.



What does his "service" of knowledge produce in the elect of God?


1 Timothy 3:16 (NKJV)

16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.

2 Peter 1:2–4 (NKJV)

2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

2 Corinthians 7:8–12 (NKJV)

8 For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. 9 Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. 11 For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter. 12 Therefore, although I wrote to you, I did not do it for the sake of him who had done the wrong, nor for the sake of him who suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear to you.



What does his "labor" build towards?

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

1 Corinthians 2:1–5 (NKJV)

1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 3 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.



What is "the work" of godliness ground upon? (v.2)


Acts 23:6 (NKJV)

6 But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, "Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee; concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!"

Acts 24:15 (NKJV)

15 I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.

Acts 26:6 (NKJV)

6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers.

Acts 26:7 (NKJV)

7 To this promise our twelve tribes, earnestly serving God night and day, hope to attain. For this hope's sake, King Agrippa, I am accused by the Jews.

Why is this hope sure and steadfast?

7 And our hope for you is steadfast because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.

12 Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech—13 unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away.

Can this "manifestation" be said in a better way? And what is the "manifestation?" (v.3)


. . . upon the hope of eternal life in God, who cannot lie, has promised him from before the times of the ages, and has manifested him in his own seasons, even the Word, through preaching, which is also entrusted to me according to the commandment of God our Savior; . . . (mast)

John 1:1–2 (NKJV)

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

If Christ is not God our Savior, how is he permitted to give commandments without saying, "Thus says the Lord?"


John 13:31–35 (NKJV)

31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. 33 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you cannot come,' so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

Matthew 28:18–20 (NKJV)

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Isn't it clear then that the "manifestation" is God in the flesh, as well as the same Word and image abiding in all who believe and continue in the mystery of this godliness, beginning with the Apostles, for God has spoken in His Son, and now of His Son in us who believe?

2 Corinthians 5:13–21 (NKJV)

24 "A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. 25 It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher and a slave like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! 26 Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.

Luke 6:39–41 (NKJV)

39 And He spoke a parable to them: "Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. 41 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye?

Luke 6:46–47 (NKJV)

46 "But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do the things which I say? 47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:



Therefore, since the letter is addressed to Titus, how is Paul bestowing a double portion of God's blessing into him as Paul pours into him all of his own assurance plus the assurance of Titus' own? (v.4)


The letter is written from more than just the love of the Apostle but from the very grace, mercy, and peace of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul is writing with the authority of God the Father and Christ Jesus our salvation. How should this boost his assurance to fulfill his ministry? These are the very words of God coming at him with all grace, mercy, and peace in the truth of Jesus Christ and in the love of the Apostle himself.

The Glory of Christ
Christ's Glory as God's Representative 

 

In fact, the light of faith is given to us chiefly to enable us to behold the glory of God in Christ (2Cor.4:6). If we do not have this light which is given to believers by the power of God, we must be strangers to the whole mystery of the gospel. But when we behold the glory of God in Christ, we behold Christ's glory also. This is how the image of God is renewed in us, and how we are made like Christ. Anyone who thinks that this is unnecessary to Christian practice and for our sanctification does not know Christ, nor the gospel. Nor has he the true faith of the universal (catholic) church. This is the root from which all Christian duties arise and grow and by which they are distinguished from the works of heathens. He is not a Christian who does not believe that faith in the person of Christ is the source and motive of all evangelical obedience or who does not know that faith rests on the revelation of the glory of God in Christ. To deny these truths would overthrow the foundation of faith and would demolish true religion in the heart. So it is our duty daily to behold by faith the glory of Christ!
