What does David understand about the way of salvation that he appeals to the faithfulness and righteousness of God to answer his prayer? (v.1)

How does David's prayer help us understand the absolute need to be justified by God to be saved from God? (v.2)


Romans 3:9–20 (NKJV)

9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin. 10 As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one." 13 "Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit"; "The poison of asps is under their lips"; 14 "Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness." 15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 And the way of peace they have not known." 18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes." 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Why is it important for us to understand that we have no right to blame God for our troubles, even when we suffer for obeying God and his righteousness? (v.3)

18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh. 19 For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. 20 For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? When David looks into the mirror of his own heart, why is he appalled? (v.4)

Since David doesn't know to look forward and see the cross of Christ in the shadow of his own cross, why does he look back to "the beginning" to find his comfort and assurance in the promise of salvation? (v.5)

What does David's land, and therefore the soul of his own image, need in this prayer of David's? (v.6)

7 Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.

What is the difference between "soul" in verse six and "spirit" in verse seven in the Hebrew by which he cries out for the need of grace in his own soul? (v.7, 10)



(nepeš). n. fem. breath, throat, life, soul. This word can refer to a life or soul.

The word has a wide range of meaning in the Hebrew Bible. It can denote the throat or neck (e.g., Job 24:12; Isa 32:6; Pss 69:1; 105:18) or the breath that comes through the throat (e.g., Job 41:21; Jer 15:9). Breath is necessary for life (Job 31:39); thus, the first man "became a living (חַי, ḥay) being (nepeš)" when God "blew into his nostrils the breath (נְשָׁמָה, nĕšāmâ) of life (חַי, ḥay)" (Gen 2:7). The word can thus also denote life, the quality of living that is lost when a person or animal dies (e.g., Gen 1:30; 19:19; 35:18; 1 Sam 19:11). In several places, the OT says that this life (nepeš) is contained in the blood (דָּם, dām); this is the foundation for the prohibition against eating blood (e.g., Gen 9:4–5; Lev 17:14). The nepeš is revived and refreshed by Yahweh and his law (Pss 19:7; 23:3; 34:22; 35:17; 54:6).

(rûaḥ). n. fem. breath, wind, spirit. Can refer to immaterial beings as well as to wind, breath, human spirits, and the spirit of God.

This word has a broad range of meanings. It can refer to wind (e.g., Exod 10:19), to the breath of humans (e.g., Job 19:17), and of animals (e.g., Gen 7:22), to the animating spirit of humans (e.g., Psa 31:5), and to the spirit of God, i.e., the Holy Spirit (e.g., Num 27:18). It occasionally refers to other immaterial beings; thus, 1 Sam 16:14–16 refers to an evil (רַע, raʿ) spirit (rûaḥ) sent to torment Saul, and 1 Kgs 22:18–22 tells of the host of heaven (or divine council) being assembled before Yahweh and a spirit (rûaḥ) from among them volunteering to be a lying spirit (rûaḥ) in the mouths of the prophets of King Ahab.

Hebrews 4:12–13 (NKJV)

What will the image (face) of God do for him that the "spirit" of the world cannot do for him? (v.7)

How does the "spirit" of the world lead him in comparison to the Spirit of truth, which is grounded in objective righteousness? (v.8, 10)

What does knowing the will of God do for those who are led by the Spirit of Christ? (v.10)

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

Why must his salvation be in the name of Yahweh that David's soul should be revived? (v.11)

Why is it righteous for David to pray for God to "cut off" David's enemies, assuming David is "revived" according to God's righteousness? (v.12)


Galatians 5:7–15 (NKJV)

7 You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump. 10 I have confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will have no other mind; but he who troubles you shall bear his judgment, whoever he is. 11 And I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution? What are David's enemies against if they are the enemies of his soul?

The Glory of Christ
Christ's Glory as God's Representative 

 

We must not rest satisfied with only an idea of this truth or a bare assent to the doctrine. Its power must stir our hearts. What is the true blessedness of the saints in heaven? Is it not to behold and see the glory of God in delight? And do we expect, doe we desire the same state of blessedness? If so, then know that it is our present view of the glory of Christ which we have by faith that prepares us for that eternal blessedness. These things may be of little use to some who are babes in knowledge and understanding or who are unspiritual, lazy, and unable to retain these divine mysteries (1Cor.3:1-2; Heb.5:12-14). But that is why Paul declared this wisdom of God in a mystery to them that were perfect, that is, who were more advanced in spiritual knowledge who had had their 'senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Heb.5:14). It is to those who are experienced in the meditation of invisible things, who delight in the more retired paths of faith and love, that they are precious. We believe in God only in and through Christ. This is the life of our souls. God himself, whose nature is infinitely perfect, is the highest object of our faith. But we cannot come directly to God by faith. We must come by the way and by the helps he has appointed for us. This is the way by which he has revealed his infinite perfections to us, which is Jesus Christ who said, 'I am the way.' By our faith in Christ we come to put our faith in God himself (Jn.14:1). And we cannot do this in any other way but by beholding the glory of God in Christ, as we have seen (Jn.1:14).
