Are You Still Using God's Image In Vain?
The Daily (NASB) Reading: Psalm 139
How do we know that David's prayer is born out of a heart "created" in the image of God? (v.1)

Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" 5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." 9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, "How can these things be?" 10 Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness.
What does this God, who calls himself Yahweh, do to assure a man that he is in "union with God" according to true religion (godliness) in the soul? (v.2)

Do those who have no consciousness of the All-knowing, All-present, and All-powerful God have "the life of God" in the soul? (v.3)
Ephesians 2:1–7 (NKJV)
1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Do those who suppress this absolute, unchangeable truth about God in hostility of those who do possess this consciousness and intimate knowledge of God live uprightly before Him according to the image and likeness of godliness abiding in the soul? (v.4)

Can we say that those who are living in rebellion against this image of the glory of God in the face of Christ are created in the image of the knowledge of this Almighty searchlight? (v.5)

Why does David confess that this knowledge is too wonderful for him? Does he see how (his love) is corruptible in the mirror of God's incorruptible knowledge? (v.6)

Therefore when he understands that it is God's incorruptible Spirit that is hedging him in on all sides and overshadowing him, how is he able to be comforted by this All-powerful presence of the All-knowing Spirit of God? (v.7)

How does this knowledge encourage him to fulfill his mission and purpose on the earth? How should this encourage the Christian to evangelize the world for the glory of this knowledge of salvation by grace through faith alone? (v.9-10)

If David sins and walks in unbelief for a moment, how does the remembrance of this knowledge hold onto him and secure him in the purpose of God's glory? (v.11)

What does the knowledge of God's light do in the soul of a man who has been reconciled to God by the light of the knowledge of the glory of God according to the grace of Christ? (v.12)

5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. 1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. But what does it mean that "darkness and light are the same" from God's perspective?

3 I will give you the treasures of darkness And hidden riches of secret places, That you may know that I, the Lord, Who call you by your name, Am the God of Israel. 4 For Jacob My servant's sake, And Israel My elect, I have even called you by your name; I have named you, though you have not known Me. 5 I am the Lord, and there is no other; There is no God besides Me. I will gird you, though you have not known Me, 6 That they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting That there is none besides Me. Why does it seem that David tries to illustrate this "perspective" of light and darkness by referring to his own "natural creation" within the knowledge and assurance of this divine application of the Almighty's gracious presence in his conscience and soul? (v.13)

Why does this confession and recognition drive him to offer thanksgiving from a heart and form of worship? (v.14)

What is his recognition but the fact that he was created (in darkness) rather than the light of God's presence as he brings his second birth, his spiritual birth "from above," to bear on his natural birth since he was created "in the depths of the earth" first? (v.15)

13 As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him. 14 For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. 16 For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, And its place remembers it no more. 17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children's children, 18 To such as keep His covenant, And to those who remember His commandments to do them.
Therefore isn't this a confession that he was not "originally" created upright in the image of God by the statement that God "saw his unformed substance" in the midst of (the void of the darkness) from the eternal perspective of the original sin? (v.16)

Jeremiah 4:22–23 (NKJV)

Yet since the darkness is as light to God, how does the book of God's election come to bear upon David's soul?
Romans 9:6–13 (NKJV)
6 But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, 7 nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, "In Isaac your seed shall be called." 8 That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed. 9 For this is the word of promise: "At this time I will come and Sarah shall have a son." 10 And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac 11 (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), 12 it was said to her, "The older shall serve the younger." 13 As it is written, "Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated."
But what was the response to this Almighty conclusion according to the knowledge of God's omnipotent but intimate foreknowing him to be set apart for the divine love and grace of Christ's substitutional image to justify him? (v.17)

19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
Therefore, is it justified to use these verses as a form of the knowledge of God to teach that every individual that is "created in darkness" is written in the book of God's election while associating what God is saying about David's (individual) faith, that is, the life of God abiding in his soul, to the image of God being applied to every individual coming into this darkness that has a faith that is stillborn before God, and therefore cannot be the image of God according to the likeness of true religion (godliness) in the soul? (v.18)
2 Timothy 3:1–7 (NKJV)
1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
If that were true and the intent of David's Psalm that every individual was created in God's image according to this likeness of faith, why does David immediately shift his thoughts in his prayer from this powerful love of God toward his whole life as a sovereign grace unto the false teachers and rulers that take counsel together so that they may destroy the elect city of the Lord's crucifixion and so they may make use of the law unlawfully with a disdain for their evil presence? (v.19)

1 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, 3 "Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us." 4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision. 5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure: 6 "Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion." 7 "I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter's vessel.'" 10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, And rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. But do these enemies of God know that they are enemies of God? (v.20)

Is it possible that these are teachers of God and of the Law who are using God's name in vain? (v.21)

What is the manner of this hatred that gradually arises within him as the hostility against his own knowledge of God and use of his office of the Law arises against him? (v.22)

Why is it significant that David asks to be searched by God all over again in addition to what he had already confessed as (a testimony of his spiritual birth from above) and in the light of God's presence consciously? How does this also demonstrate that he is seeking God's judgment and approval so that he may not be condemned with the world? (v.23)

How does this demonstrate his own humility in confessing his own corruptibility of heart concerning this hatred that arises within him? How does this keep him from acting unbecoming when he moves in position to act on this hatred of God's enemies? (v.24)

Since he is aware that his love, too, is corruptible, what is the Hebrew meaning of searching for an "offensive way" in him? Is it possible that this hatred may have been shaped out of love for an idolatrous image of his own making rather than a love for the glory of God?

(ʿāṣāb). n. masc. idol. Refers to idols as created objects, fashioned by human hands.
All occurrences of ʿāṣāb are plural (עֲצַבִּים, ʿăṣabbîm), though the variant form עֹצֶב (ʿōṣeb) is singular and used once in Isa 48:5. Like pesel and pāsîl, the word seems to carry the sense of an object that was fashioned by hand (compare the other uses of the root in Job 10:8; Jer 22:28; 44:19). The word ʿāṣāb is used synonymously with other words for idols, as in Mic 1:7 where it is in poetic parallel with pāsîl. How is it still humble of David to be asking how to be led according to true religion in the soul rather than by the emotion of his own hatred?
