Chp.75 - Moses "Dead" Lifts The Name Of Jesus On High

“Moreover, in the book of Exodus we have also perceived that the name of God Himself, which, He says, was not revealed to Abraham or to Jacob, was Jesus, and was declared mysteriously through Moses. Thus it is written: ‘And the Lord spake to Moses, Say to this people, Behold, I send My angel before thy face, to keep thee in the way, to bring thee into the land which I have prepared for thee. Give heed to Him, and obey Him; do not disobey Him. For He will not draw back from you; for My name is in Him.’4 Justin Martyr. (1885). Dialogue of Justin with Trypho, a Jew. In A. Roberts, J. Donaldson, & A. C. Coxe (Eds.), The Apostolic Fathers with Justin Martyr and Irenaeus (Vol. 1, p. 236). Buffalo, NY: Christian Literature Company. We find here that the children of Israel were to obey the messenger of the Lord, of whom bore His Name, and who was the chosen one to bring Israel into her own land. Exodus 23:20–22 (Brenton LXX En) 20 And, behold, I send my angel before thy face, that he may keep thee in the way, that he may bring thee into the land which I have prepared for thee. 21 Take heed to thyself and hearken to him, and disobey him not; for he will not give way to thee, for my name is on him. 22 If ye will indeed hear my voice, and if thou wilt do all the things I shall charge thee with, and keep my covenant, ye shall be to me a peculiar people above all nations, for the whole earth is mine; and ye shall be to me a royal priesthood, and a holy nation: these words shall ye speak to the children of Israel, If ye shall indeed hear my voice, and do all the things I shall tell thee, I will be an enemy to thine enemies, and an adversary to thine adversaries. In other words, Christ was (in this man) to be the leader in the Providence of God and establish Israel in her own land as royal priests of God (Num.27:18). But this priesthood is based solely on this particular Name of God. Through this Name Israel was to utterly wipe out the idols of this land that God has chosen to be used for His holy mediation to the nations. If God is to be 'Savior,' He is to be savior of all nations. But Israel was the chosen instrument by which His Name would be lifted high above every common name. Therefore the Name of the LORD is holy.

"Now understand that He who led your fathers into the land is called by this name Jesus, and first called Auses5 (Oshea). For if you shall understand this, you shall likewise perceive that the name of Him who said to Moses, ‘for My name is in Him,’ was Jesus." Justin Martyr. The man, whom God calls his 'angel' and messenger, chosen for this task was Hoshea, which means "May Yahweh Save". But out of this heart of prayer this man is given a new name by Moses before he is sent in to take this land, to fulfill this divine purpose of God's love. Numbers 13:17 (Brenton LXX En) 17 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land; and Moses called Ause the son of Naue, Joshua. Numbers 13:16 (NKJV) 16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua. The name given to him was Joshua, which means "Yahweh Is Mighty To Save." Justin has brought this to the mind of Trypho, before; but keeps reintroducing it with a deeper quality, to give more and more understanding. The Jews are just a babe in their understanding until they get to Christ's life, death and resurrection. In Him they become a man. Because their understanding is based on Law they are blinded to the passages that deal with and speak of the "Mighty Savior" who will, according to the old promise, save them from their sins. Joshua, here, is the one who saves them from physical destruction and brings them into the "safety" of their own land, to dwell with God and make offerings to His Name. Moses, too, was a deliverer, but Moses only brought them out of bondage; he was not able to bring them into the promised land of safety. In the wilderness Israel was vulnerable and naked. But Joshua clothes them and builds them up in prosperity. Together, these men bore Christ's Name as deliverers. But Christ is greater than the strong arm of the flesh, for they did not doe this apart from the Spirit of God abiding in them. So, Joshua was to remove those ancient landmarks that were dedicated to the idolatries of the pagans whom Joshua was commanded to utterly destroy. He was to wipe out their memory off the face of the earth for the sake of the children who would inherit the land and be built up upon the Name of Yahweh. They were to establish a new heritage of their own, according to the Law of the LORD. Therefore, this is not a commandment to all nations to remove their landmarks, but is restricted to only the children of Israel, and to this land which was given to them to hold up the Name of the LORD for all nations to see the superiority of His Name.

Therefore, Christians living as pilgrims and citizens of a nation contrary to their inheritance, through the Name of Christ, are not under this commandment; but are to dwell among the pagans and live as holy examples of the Name of God. They are to be like Hoshea, a little savior, as a prayer to God to save the land and the people of the foreign nations. But their loyalties are in the citizenship and heritage of the LORD. So, they are to use those foreign landmarks as a tool to demonstrate and illustrate what is evil and what is good in the heart of man, but to direct the heart of man toward holiness and fear in the Name of the LORD of all nations. They are not sent in by God to spy and to conquer these lands in a military campaign; but to suffer with the nations, as Christ suffered under the sins and curses of his own nation. For, indeed, He was also called Israel, and Jacob’s name was changed to this also. Now Isaiah shows that those prophets who are sent to publish tidings from God are called His angels and apostles. For Isaiah says in a certain place, ‘Send me.’6 And that the prophet whose name was changed, Jesus [Joshua], was strong and great, is manifest to all. If, then, we know that God revealed Himself in so many forms to Abraham, and to Jacob, and to Moses, how are we at a loss, and do not believe that, according to the will of the Father of all things, it was possible for Him to be born man of the Virgin, especially after we have such7 Scriptures, from which it can be plainly perceived that He became so according to the will of the Father? Justin Martyr. Are you willing to be sent by the LORD to lift high this Name? Will you be the prayer of Isaiah and Hoshea? Will you "go" where God tells you to go? Will you suffer how God commands you to suffer? Or do you need milk and not solid food? Do you need to know the Name of the LORD? to know whom you are to pray to? to know who will send you? Are you more like Trypho or more like Hoshea? Come to Christ and learn his Name, for he bears the Name that saves. Matthew 1:21 (NKJV) 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Jesus saved his people from their sins, but their is a flock of people who are not of the heritage of the LORD whom he shall save from their sins (Jn.10:16). Do you desire the eternal heritage of the LORD? For as in this heritage, where Israel wipes out the heritage of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, Hivites, and the Jebusites, so will the idolatrous heritage of the whole world will be cut off from the inheritance of the LORD. The LORD has extended his hand of peace in the death and sufferings of His Only Son, but only those taught the fear of the LORD and the life of his resurrection will have the power over the second death. Will you be found in the Son, whose Name is Jesus of Nazareth? For there is no other Name under heaven through which a man can be saved. So even Israel, our mother, must be saved from "dead" works in order to be saved by this Name, for in Moses you are only half way there (Heb.6:1).

Acts 4:11–12 (NKJV) 11 This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

The Glory of Christ
Christ's Glory as God's Representative

We must not rest satisfied with only an idea of this truth or a bare assent to the doctrine. Its power must stir our hearts. What is the true blessedness of the saints in heaven? Is it not to behold and see the glory of God in delight? And do we expect, doe we desire the same state of blessedness? If so, then know that it is our present view of the glory of Christ which we have by faith that prepares us for that eternal blessedness. These things may be of little use to some who are babes in knowledge and understanding or who are unspiritual, lazy, and unable to retain these divine mysteries (1Cor.3:1-2; Heb.5:12-14). But that is why Paul declared this wisdom of God in a mystery to them that were perfect, that is, who were more advanced in spiritual knowledge who had had their 'senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Heb.5:14). It is to those who are experienced in the meditation of invisible things, who delight in the more retired paths of faith and love, that they are precious. We believe in God only in and through Christ. This is the life of our souls. God himself, whose nature is infinitely perfect, is the highest object of our faith. But we cannot come directly to God by faith. We must come by the way and by the helps he has appointed for us. This is the way by which he has revealed his infinite perfections to us, which is Jesus Christ who said, 'I am the way.' By our faith in Christ we come to put our faith in God himself (Jn.14:1). And we cannot do this in any other way but by beholding the glory of God in Christ, as we have seen (Jn.1:14).
